Medicare recipients will soon be issued new cards, with a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. Due to the risk of identity theft, social security numbers will no longer be used for processing claims and for determining eligibility for services. The new card will not change benefits.
The change was made possible by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015. The transition period from the old cards to the new will begin this month with new beneficiaries and run through December of 2019. Most Colorado recipients will receive their new cards in the next few months.
If you or your patients have questions about the new cards, please contact Julie.Hood@sclhs.net, or Ext. 22148.
