Don’t forget that stroke surveyors from The Joint Commission will be in the building on Friday, August 25, evaluating Platte Valley and all of the employees on our level of knowledge and skill in handling stroke-related emergencies. They may ask you a variety of questions about stroke care, but the most important detail to remember is the mnemonic FAST.
FAST stands for:
- Face – Ask the person to smile, and check to see if the face droops on one side.
- Arm – Check if the person has a weak or numb arm. Determine this by asking the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech – Is speech slurred? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Can they repeat this accurately and with clear speech?
- Time – Every minute counts. Get help. Call 555 and ask for the Rapid Assessment Team
