At the Employee Holiday Celebration on December 5, it was announced that Nutritional Services won the Decorating Contest with their cute Christmas “tree” made from non-latex gloves, with tasty treats for ornaments and a chef’s hat for a tree star. A red cloth napkin served for a skirt, and a dusting of powdered sugar “snow” made the tree look sweet indeed. The prize for winning the contest is a choice of pizza party or Chick-fil-A party, and of course, house-wide fame.

Research has shown that yoga has a positive impact on the mind and the body. Even incorporating simple poses into your work day can improve your sense of well-being. The office downward dog pose is an easy stretch to perform at your desk or even against a wall between treating patients. It provides an opportunity to take a quick mental break, tune into your breath, stretch your whole back body and energize your spine. To do: Stand facing a desk or chair, feet hip width apart. Spread out your fingers as you place your palms on the desk, shoulder width apart. Step back until your spine is parallel to the floor. Relax your head and neck, allowing your chest to drop down toward the floor. Lift your kneecaps and feel the length in your spine. Remain for a few deep breaths, then slowly step forward and release.
If you’re looking for more yoga, join us in the conference center on Tuesdays, 4:45-5:20 p.m. and Thursdays, 12:15 to 12:50 p.m. Instruction is provided by Karen Vizyak, physical therapist and certified yoga teacher. A 10-class punch card can be purchased at the Physical Medicine Department for only $38, or you can pay a $4 drop-in fee. Props will be provided, but you must bring your own mat. This is a fun, energizing way to improve your strength, flexibility and balance, reduce stress and increase your concentration for the rest of your day! All levels of experience are welcome. For more information, please contact the Physical Medicine Department (Suite 130), x1840.
On Dec 3 – 5th, PVMC underwent a Planetree Designation Assessment. Two representatives from Planetree – Christy Davies, designation oordinator and Jim Kinsey, director of Planetree Member Experience, came onsite and conducted various focus groups representing all aspects of the organization, patient interviews and a facility tour to gauge our progress in achieving a truly patient-centered care environment at PVMC.
The preliminary findings were extremely positive and we look forward to receiving the comprehensive report by January 17th, 2014. Based on their finalized report, and assuming we can address all “recommendations requiring follow up” by March 5th, 2014, PVMC’s application will be presented to the Designation Committee on March 19th, 2014 for consideration of Planetree Designation.
Achieving Planetree Designation will place PVMC in the esteemed group of 23 other Designated organizations in the United States and 48 Designated facilities world-wide. We are extremely proud in the strides taken throughout the organization to continually strive for excellence in patient-centered care.

The due date for annual mandatory HealthStream education will be changing in 2014! All of your mandatory assignments will be available beginning on January 1st, 2014, and will need to be completed by February 28th, 2014.
We hope that by shortening this time frame, we will reduce confusion about due dates for assignments that are added throughout the year. The really good news is….there will be NO new assignments made between January and February of 2014!
If you have questions or concerns, please see your director or supervisor.
