Over the past two years, SCL Health has been moving toward increased transparency to help consumers make better-informed decisions about where to receive health and wellness care. We also support sharing data about our quality and safety and patient satisfaction.
Front Range hospitals were among the first locally to post Emergency Room level-of-care prices for patients without insurance. St. Mary’s, in Grand Junction, made many common prices public last year, and there’s a plan to extend transparency efforts to Montana care sites in the near future.
As of Jan. 1, and in accordance with a new Colorado law (SB65), SCL Health has posted cash prices for common healthcare services (50 most common Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) and 25 most common outpatient Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes) when payment is made directly by the patient. The listed prices reflect our self-pay discounts and are found on the websites of each Colorado care site, under Patients and Visitors – Understanding Medical Costs.
Inpatient procedures are listed as an average and a range, and outpatient procedures are based on average list prices per care site. The prices are for standard service and could change based on complexity or additional treatment. Also listed on our website are the 15 most common services our employed physicians offer in their clinics.
Patients without insurance will experience variation in these costs by individual facility and region. We cannot always provide exact prices for each individual because much depends on the unique health needs and characteristics of a patient, as well as the specific services they receive.
We believe promoting and supporting transparency in pricing as well as clinical quality is the right thing to do. Transparency reinforces our brand as SCL Health and as a non-profit provider. Because people are paying more for services out of their own pockets, SCL Health and other systems are working to make it easier for them to understand their costs and their choices. Our goal is to empower patients to make better healthcare choices through education and transparency.
This effort is a work in progress and we will learn more over time about what is helpful to consumers. There are limitations to the value to all patients currently due to the complexity of the billing process and insurance coverage. As part of this work we regularly seek advice from patient advisory groups, who have helped us make modifications and simplify the information.
We also are committed to helping our patients understand their bills and financial responsibility and to answer their questions.
